Chaffee County is located in the central part of Colorado. It is an old county named after James Chaffee, the first senator from Colorado. Chaffee County has 12 peaks that rise above 14,000 feet. This is the highest in the entire state of Colorado. It was the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859 that brought people to Rocky Mountains. In Chaffee County, it was Catch Creek that became the first settlement for this white population.
